We polled the team here at Poquet Auto. Here are the big performance, safety, and technology innovations they’re excited to see roll out.
1. Performance Innovations
Mazda Skyactiv-X Engine
Can a gas-powered engine run like a diesel? If you’re Mazda’s Skyactiv-X compression-ignition engine, the answer is yes it can!
According to Mazda’s website, this engine “achieves the world’s highest gasoline engine compression ratio of 14:0:1.” This translates into impressive power gains and fuel efficiency savings. The engine is available on select 2017 and 2018 models.
Ford F-150 Debuts Diesel Version
More trucks are going diesel in 2018.

Toyota Safety Features Go Mainstream
Toyota safety features will become standard across a wider selection of models. According to a recent press release, “its Toyota Safety Sense™(TSS) package of active safety features will begin rolling out as standard equipment on certain Toyota vehicles beginning in mid-2018.” This package includes Lane Departure Alert, an updated Pre-Collision System, and enhanced radar cruise control. We’re excited to see where technological innovation can take us in terms of safety.
3. Technology Innovations
Nissan Rogue Goes Semi-Autonomous
The 2018 Nissan Rogue will be the first car available in the US to offer a semi-autonomous driving experience. It’s level 1 autonomous, which is a far cry from level 5(completely driverless). However, its ProPILOT Assist can be a big help on the highway, where it can follow the car ahead of you at a preset distance, and help you stay in your lane. Check out Nissan’s website for more details.
Tesla Trucking Unveils Plans for the Future
Wondering what else is in the works for autonomous vehicles? In November 2017, Tesla unveiled plans for a semi-autonomous semi truck, with production slated to begin in 2019. The trucks have the capacity to travel in train-like groups, with only one driver in the lead vehicle. In addition to saving on labor, travelling in these groups would also help reduce wind resistance and emissions. Fortune has the details.
