5 Historic Super Bowl Car Commercials [video]

Commercials during the big game certainly take center stage between snaps and the halftime show. Car manufacturers, in particular, know they have a large, captive audience and tend to spend munificently to produce over-the-top commercials for their newest rides. Some of them play out like short feature films while others are geared for branding rather than advertising a specific vehicle. Many of them, however, are simply memorable for reasons of creativity, timeliness, or shock value.

Here are 5 historic car commercials featured during the big game:

  1. Audi A8 - “Godfather” (2009)

The use of an iconic scene from a cinematic classic helped Audi put “old luxury” on notice.

  1. Ram Trucks - “Farmer” (2013)

Stark imagery and powerful narration pull on emotional heartstrings in this piece from Chrysler.

  1. VW Passat - “The Force” (2011)

An instant classic: a kid in a Darth Vader costume unleashing the power of the force.

  1. Ford Mustang GT Convertible - “Green Light” (2005)

Definitely one Minnesotans can relate to.

  1. Pontiac GTO - “Humbler” (1970)

Apparently, this commercial only aired once. GM pulled the spot because it was considered too antisocial for the times.
