Did you tune in to the Big Game on Sunday night? Whether you rooted for the Eagles or the Patriots (or neither, as a proud Minnesotan), it was an exciting game down to the final seconds.
It was also another good year for car commercials.
Here’s a roundup of our favorites. (Like one we didn’t list? Mention it in the comments!)
Kia Stinger
Getting in a Kia Stinger is transformative. At least it is for rock and roll legend Steven Tyler.
Emerging from a trailer parked at the center of a racetrack, Tyler puts the Stinger in reverse to go back in time and regain his youth and adoring fans.
Even if the Stinger can’t bring us a crowd of adoring fans, we’d anticipate at least a few looks of envy with its impressive specs. The GT version boasts an impressive 365 horsepower, and a twin-turbo V6 engine.
Did you catch the Beatles-like secret message? Watch the video backwards here, and listen closely at 0:54. Then, you can scroll through youtube and go down memory lane with some of Tyler’s greatest hits.
Toyota: Good Odds
There’s not a car to be found in this ad. Instead, it focuses on Lauren Woolstencroft, a para-alpine skier from Canada who has won 8 gold medals.
Odds of winning a Paralympic gold medal are close to 1 in 1 billion. But as we see Lauren grow up and take on physical challenges, her odds become better and better, until she crosses the finish line of a gold-winning race to the odds “1 in 1.”
The spot ends with a call to “start your impossible,” and Lindsey telling us that “when we’re free to move, anything is possible.”
Toyota is a sponsor of the 2018 Olympic and Paralympic Games. This ad has us excited for opening ceremonies this Friday.
Jeep: Anti-Manifesto
Poking fun at commercials like Toyota’s, Jeep came out with an “Anti-Manifesto” for its spot.
There are no bold claims about what the Jeep brand “means,” or causes the brand “cares” about. Just footage of a Jeep in the wilderness, performing pretty incredible feats of agility.
It may be a few months before you can drive your Jeep up flowing waterfalls in Minnesota. But this commercial definitely has us feeling the road trip itch. Maybe we can load up a Jeep with cross-country skis and head north. For the non-snow enthusiasts, February might be a great time to road-trip south. Texas anyone?
Lexus LS 500 F Sport/ Marvel Studios’ Black Panther Commercial
Need a sweet ride for your next superhero mission?
If you’re the Black Panther, the Lexus LS 500 F is your vehicle.
The title character of the Marvel movie out February 16th uses a Lexus to secure the vibranium, outsmart the bad guys, and make a sweet getaway, arriving unscathed at the World Leadership Conference.
“Long live the king,” the spot intones, and we can’t help thinking we’d feel like royalty in that vehicle.
