When we read about the world record for driving in a roundabout, it’s safe to say that it brought a few of us back to this scene from the 1985 movie, National Lampoon’s European Vacation.
To have a little fun with this unique record, we want to ask our Facebook followers to share their favorite “driving in circles” stories. One included an 80s music jam session… while a few discovered places ‘Where the Streets Had No Names.’
- "When I was a young driver and had no idea the real cost of gas or mileage, I got on 494 heading south instead of north. Instead of getting off and turning around, I decided to experience the big circle around the Twin Cities, 494 in Maple Grove south and then east, and finally hooking up with 694 heading north and then west, and up to Hugo. To me it was just a fun way to listen to more great 80's music on the radio!" - JS
- "Driving through western Lakeville for 30 min. Accidentally ending up at the intersection of 50 and 35." -NP
- "My family rented a small car and drove through seven countries in seven days during a European vacation over Christmas one year. After spending the night sleeping in the car because we couldn't find a place to stay, we headed into what we thought was Switzerland, only to find out we were actually in Austria. Oops..." - BGF
- "I had just bought a new house I was only there once with the realtor. I was suppose to meet an inspector and realtor there and thought I knew how to get there I drove around and around Rosemount looking for the street. Finally, after an hour, I found it. How embarrassing..." - BWF
- "That would be my first date with my wife. I drove and drove, not even paying attention to where we were going so we could keep the conversation going. She told me later she thought I was kidnapping her." - KO
- "Trying to find a Holiday Inn downtown many years ago before we lived here. We could see it but being unfamiliar with one ways and Nicollet Mall it took us about 20 minutes to get to it." - RL
- "While on a family trip in FL, my family got lost on the way home from Orlando. We kept driving the same area over and over and even stopped at the same location twice for directions." - TJ
- "I was driving to a work event, trying to find the Minneapolis Convention Center. I kept driving over 94 in the opposite direction and then back again. I was late, of course!" - PJ
- "Years ago it took me 3 hours to find St Michael, MN from Apple Valley, MN. Thank goodness for Google Maps. I would still trying to find my way." - NW
- "I was trying to throw trash away, circling businesses until no one was around haha." - ST
- "GPS took me in circles one time. When I passed the same place I'd just been. I realized my GPS was not helping me!" - JE
