Let’s admit it, the weather the past month or so has gotten us Minnesotans excited for the spring season. We had record highs in March and the “official” start of spring was not too long ago, as well. Despite this new found rejuvenation, we must remember that spring driving can be a little misleading in the safety department and here are 5 reasons why you need to drive safely this spring.
1) Rain and Flooding
April showers bring May flowers and that holds true for this time of year. Despite that fact that we will probably experience a few dustings of snow and a few major downpours between now and May, precipitation is precipitation; it is important to remember that wets roads are still slippery and driving at a respectable rate of speed should still be in full effect.
2) It’s Hail Season
Now there may be a few Halestorm fans in the house (rock on) but, hailstorms are not fun and spring is the time to take cover. As we know, even the smallest hailstones can shatter a windshield and turn your car into a dimpled golf ball.
3) Winter Road Wear & Tear
Salt, sand, shovels, and snow plows are all common causes for road damage (such as potholes) and once the snow and ice melts, the loose pieces of roadway turn into projectiles when they’re kicked up by your tires and can also affect the traction your car gets on the road. But don’t worry, construction season will fix all of that, shortly.
4) Hungry Animals are Hitting the Streets
Similar to Yogi Bear looking for a “pic-a-nic bask-et,” animals are awakening from their winter slumber and are in search of food. Although you may not run into a bear stealing your PB & J sandwich, plenty of other little critters will be “hangry” and looking for some tasty treats. This is also the time of year where animal owners may leave their pets outside for more extended periods of time, and we all know that a dog can find freedom a little tempting if that backyard fence/gate isn’t fully closed.
5) Bicycles, Bicycles Everywhere
In May of 2015, Minneapolis took the crown for the Most Bike-Friendly City in the U.S. On top of that fine accomplishment, Minneapolis was the only U.S. city to be ranked in the top 20 (ranking at #18) for the Most Bike-Friendly Cities in the World!
So, that means that more bicyclists will be hitting the roads and you need to be prepared. Driving alongside cyclists can make traffic maneuvers, from turning right to parallel parking, more dangerous.
Tips to Stay Safe This Spring (via esurance)
- Check your lights: Since spring rain hinders driving visibility, make sure all your lights work, including headlights, taillights, backup lights, turn signals, parking lights, and brake lights.
- Replace your wiper blades: Worn-out wiper blades may not be up to the task of clearing water away from your windshield. Check your wiper blades and replace them if necessary (usually once a year).
- Check your tire pressure: Harsh winter weather can deflate your tires. Make sure you have enough air in them once spring rolls around. (As a bonus, proper tire pressure can also help you increase your mpg.)
- Slow down and drive carefully: The first few rainy days of spring can produce exceptionally slippery roads due to oil and other leaked fluids mixing with rainwater, so slow down and increase your stopping distance when it's raining.
- Keep your eyes peeled for bad road conditions: Remember that harsh winter weather breeds potholes and other driving obstacles.
- Watch out for animals: This is especially important during the early morning and evening when animals are most active.
