It’s no surprise that summer is the busiest time out on the roads. Whether you’re heading out just for the weekend or planning a trip across the country, it’s important to make sure your vehicle is ready to go for your upcoming road trip. Here are some tips to help ensure that you, your family, and your car is prepared for your next venture.
Being prepared is essential when you hit the open road. Be sure to pack supplies in case of an accident or medical issue. Your vehicle should always be stocked with an emergency kit (flashlight, blanket, first-aid kit, water, snacks, etc.) at all times, even when you’re simply commuting to work every day.
Inspect each tire for any bulges or tears in the side walls. Make sure the tire pressures equal the numbers that are listed in the owner’s manual. Also, check the tread of each tire; the simplest way to measure this (if you don’t have a gauge) is to hold a quarter upside down and set it in the tread. If the top of George Washington’s head is visible, your tread is low and you may need new tires.
Grab your spouse, friend, or kid for this one, as it’s easiest with two people. Sit in the car and turn on each light and signal and have the other person tell you if it’s working or not. Keep in mind that changing bulbs (especially front lights) can take a bit of time in newer cars, so don’t leave this for minutes before you head out the door.
Checking the oil, coolant, and wiper fluid levels may help you avoid an accident or unnecessary breakdown on the side of the highway. If needed, refer to your car’s owner manual to locate where various fluid reservoirs are.
When sharing the road with other motorists during peak travel times, traffic jams are inevitable. Try driving late at night or early in the morning to avoid the rush and decrease stress levels. And remember to drive with caution through work zones to ensure everyone’s safety.
