Winter is coming. Soon, you’ll be driving through slush, chipping ice blocks out of your wheel wells, and scraping frost off your windshield in the refreshing negative-degree air. Winter driving in Minnesota is not for the faint of heart.

What does it take to make it through the long, blustery months? Here are some smart things to do.

  • Always check the weather before you drive. A great resource is  www.Mn511.org, which provides you with an interactive road map that shows you areas of poor driving conditions.
  • Know which radio stations broadcast weather warnings so that you can tune in during a long drive.
  • Keep a survival kit in your car, especially if you’re driving in the country.
  • Let someone else know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
  • Make sure your phone is charged and your gas tank is full.
  • Give yourself plenty of stopping distance when braking on snowy or icy roads.

And you should be sure to winterize your car before the weather turns cold. This infographic from SpareFoot boils it down to seven simple steps. Check it out:
