Everyone knows distracted driving is extremely dangerous. The CDC reports that nearly one in five vehicle crashes where someone is injured result from distracted driving.
Recently, we asked our Facebook followers to tell us what they’ve seen distracted drivers doing while out on the road. Their responses, while quite entertaining, prove distracted driving is still a big issue.
1. I saw a woman with a cell phone in BOTH hands driving with her knees - GM
2. I saw a guy driving his BMW, open his sunroof, and stand up to take a selfie of my friend's Lamborghini. I'm not sure how he didn't crash! - BA
3. On the same commute, I saw a gal playing a guitar and a few miles later a guy playing a French horn – both on I-94 going 70+ mph!
4. I saw two people switch drivers while driving down the interstate. -BD
5. I saw someone changing their outfit while driving - TB
6. I saw someone taking off her girdle while driving! - DM
7. I saw someone putting on toenail polish. - PH
8. I saw someone shaving and reading the paper at the same time while driving 65 mph. -DR
9. I saw a guy eating a bowl of soup – he used one hand to hold the bowl and the other for his spoon. - PJ
10. This morning, I saw a guy preparing his breakfast in a bowl (pouring cereal, adding milk) and starting to eat with a spoon while driving on I-494. I was a distracted driver watching him! -LG
11. I used to see a girl reading a book and eating a McDonalds breakfast sandwich at the same time every day. -BS
Next time you head out on the road, think of these stories and put down any distractions. You can’t control what crazy, distracting things other drivers are doing, but you can keep yourself focused so you can react quickly to emerging situations. Your safety and the safety of others might depend on it.
