Here in Minneapolis, winter is winding down. Maybe not going away for good. But at least, making its exit into spring. More sun and more bearable temps bring a new strategy for car care.
Here are six spring car care tips to optimize your ride:
Once the dirt, grime, and salt are potentially off the roads, get those corrosive buggers off your car as well. Allowing such debris and grime to build up on your car can affect the paint and finish, and we all know what salt residue can do in terms of rust and deterioration.
You’ve spent the time cleaning and prepping the outside of your car, so don’t forget about the inside. Spring is the perfect time to open all of those doors to get after the trash and other items that have collected in your car’s interior. Make sure you also take care of those abused floor mats!
With all the current fluctuations in temperature lately, your tire pressure warning light may be going on and off. Because air expands and contracts based on temperature, your tires may be over- or under-inflated more often come spring. Tire pressure is an important part of your car’s drivability and fuel economy. So if you don’t feel comfortable checking your car’s tire pressures by yourself, have a professional check them out.
Your wiper blades probably took a beating over the winter. Now is the right time to check them for any signs of cracking or wear. Once those spring rains hit, you’ll be happy you took the time to replace worn out wiper blades.
Lift up the hood on your car to check for any wear and damage to belts and hoses. Specifically, look to make sure cold temperatures haven’t rendered them brittle or heavily worn. While you’re in there poking around, check out your coolant level. Again, if you’re not comfortable digging under the hood, set up a time for the professionals to get their hands dirty.
Winter is harsh on roads, especially in heavily trafficked areas around the Twin Cities. Spring is otherwise known around here as pothole season – a time your car cringes with every bump and hole. If you’ve taken one too many bumps this season, have a professional mechanic check your car’s alignment and suspension components.
