Weird Driving Laws in Minnesota and Beyond

Rules of road are typically based on safety. Nevertheless, as times and technology change, effectively changing the logic for the initial rule, many laws are often left on the books to rot and end up on lists like these for a good chuckle.

Here in Minnesota, we are not immune to strange and unusual driving laws. Check out these two doozies:

  1. It is against the law to drive a red car on Lake Street in Minneapolis. Really, it is. We’re not entirely sure why.
  2. In Minnetonka, it is illegal to drive a truck with mud on the tires. Well, not exactly. If the mud stays on your tires, you’re fine. However, should mud or any debris be left on the roadway, you are considered a public nuisance and subject to a fine.

Whether they are simply outdated or ridiculous to begin with, here are 10 strange laws from around the nation.

  1. Denver prohibits driving a black car on Sunday.
  2. Tennessee and Mississippi both have laws that require female drivers to have a male flagger walking in front of the vehicle.
  3. Oregon has a law against leaving your car door open too long.
  4. Oregon also makes it mandatory to yield to pedestrians while driving on a sidewalk. Seems reasonable enough.
  5. In California, it is illegal for anyone to jump from a car that is going more than 65 miles an hour.
  6. It is also illegal for women to drive in California while wearing a bathrobe.
  7. It is illegal to spit from a car or a bus in Marietta, Georgia. It is, however, okay to spit from a truck.
  8. In Rhode Island, it is illegal to pass someone without making an audible noise.
  9. In Hilton Head, South Carolina, it is illegal to store trash in your vehicle. Ah, rats!
  10. We guess this last one is a good law; however, we’re just a bit concerned as to why officials in Dublin, Georgia deemed it necessary to make driving through playgrounds illegal on the books.

We did our due Google-search diligence to figure out why it remains illegal to drive a red car on Lake Street to no avail. Do you know the history of this law? If you do, please share in the comments below.
